When Enron premiered at the Minerva Theatre in Chichester in July, the critics went a bit bonkers. Enron is a Citizen Kane for our time, said one. “Aristotle himself would relish the hubris,” gushed another. Others called Enron “exhilarating”, “dazzling” and “astonishing”.
The Times went one better though and got some finance insiders to give their opinion…
Did Tom enjoy the show? “Absolutely,” he says. “It’s entertaining. But it worries me. I know the story of Enron quite well and the show doesn’t give you the full story.”
And that is not all that worries him. He worries what message the public will take from the show. “The problem I have is that it says capitalism is wrong.”
There are also some forthright views about the current state of play – “Big firms that operate in the market are in the pockets of the boards and directors of companies that pay fat accountancy fees," says another of the financial critics.
