No not TV-tough-guy ’surallen’ but the Texan cricket fan Sir R. Allen Stanford who is awaiting trial on fraud charges. The big Texan (he’s 6′4″ apparently) was granted a transfer on Monday from a private Texas jail to a federal one closer to his lawyers in downtown Houston according to the NYT, after he was involved in a jailhouse scrap.
In the making of the transfer order the fighting incident did not receive a mention but details have emerged – we don’t know what the other guy looked like but according to Sir Allen’s lawyer, Kent Schaffer, Stanford suffered a concussion, two black eyes and a broken nose. The case is likely to be bloody complicated quite time consuming for those preparing it, so best keep the man at the centre healthy in the meantime.
As for the charges, the financier has denied 21 felony charges suggesting he paid early investors “improbable if not impossible” returns by doing a Ponzi with funds from later buyers of certificates of deposit at Stanford International Bank.
