A bizarre case of an accountant, André Bamberski, 72, taking justice into his own hands was reported yesterday. The accountant allegedly turned vigilante was trying to seek justice for his daughter who was killed over 27 years ago. The case centres around the kidnap of Dieter Krombach, a German cardiologist, who was convicted by a French court in 1995 for the girl’s manslaughter in his absence, after German authorities refused to extradite him. The Times reports :

In 1995, the Paris assizes court sentenced Mr Krombach to 15 years in jail for the unintentional killing in 1982 of Kalinka Baberski, 14, with the injection of a toxic substance. The girl had been visiting her mother who was living with Mr Krombach in the Bavarian town of Lindau.

The German authorities refused to extradite Mr Krombach because courts there had ruled that the cause of Kalinka’s death was unknown.

[In] the Paris trial in 1995 … Mr Krombach was convicted of “deliberate violence leading to death without the intention of killing”.

The kidnappers dumped a bound Mr Krombach in front of a French courthouse before an anonymous caller tipped off police. Krombach is now being held by French authorities as a fugitive and is likely to face a new trial in France. Meanwhile, Mr Bamberski is expected to face criminal charges over the abduction.
