The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) said wrong information may have been sent out to “huge numbers of people” and warned that unless it was corrected, it could cost them hundreds of pounds.

A new system has sent out a stream of incorrect tax codes.

Top tax expert Mike Warburton, a senior partner at accountancy firm Grant Thornton, said: ‘Something has gone haywire. My daughter got three tax codes and they were all wrong. It was a complete mess.’

HMRC has apologised for the inconvenience. But nice as that sounds, don’t expect a refund if your’s isn’t sorted.
