Not quite a Bernie Madoff but miserable for the unfortunate victims which included pensioners, cancer patients, friends and a church.

MEN: David Atkinson was a respected neighbourhood accountant who had operated his own firm in Heywood for nearly 25 years.

Who wasn’t all that respectable – he didn’t even bother to invest his victims’ cash.

Instead of investing the money, he was using the cash to fuel an uncontrollable gambling addiction.

Atkinson pleaded guilty at Bolton Crown Court to 15 counts of theft and asked for 58 similar offences to be taken into consideration.
