Former Deloitte Trainee Loses High Stakes Gamble
Firm credit card, firm laptop, on-line gambiling…uh-oh…
A Deloitte trainee used a company credit card to blow more than £8,000 by online gambling from a company laptop. The belt and braces approach to screwing one’s employer.
Umar Qureshi, a former student at Deloitte, initially lied about the card charges – rather than admitting to being a terrible gambler, he told Deloitte that they were fraudulent.
However, at an ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales) tribunal hearing, he admitted breaching the £8,000 credit card limit by carrying out a his online gambling activities from a Deloitte laptop between October and November 2008.
The tribunal ordered that he cease to be a provisional member and be ineligible for re-registration for six months, and that he be severely reprimanded says Accountancy Age.
Unsurprisingly, Deloitte terminated his contract in January 2009 after an internal disciplinary.
