Tax Amnesty Proves Popular
It’s even been billed as the ‘best amnesty ever’…
Regulatory clampdowns are not usually popular for the clampees in the traditional sense. However, there is one particular tax amnesty that offers a little more than the usual negative incentive for potential tax evaders:
Telegraph: Offshore tax dodgers are being offered “the best amnesty ever” which could even enable them to avoid inheritance tax (IHT) on undeclared assets, accountants claim.
…
Under the terms of the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility (LDF) people who own up to undeclared assets need only pay up to 10 years’ back tax – or half the usual tariff – a fixed 10 per cent penalty, instead of the threat of jail sentences, and they may avoid IHT altogether. It is understood that HMRC is taking a ‘bird in the hand’ approach to tackling offshore tax evasion and hopes to maximise revenues by a softer initial approach, followed by individual investigations and prosecutions later for those who ignore the LDF.
Given that the deal is based on stolen data – HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is understood to have paid millions of pounds for account holder information stored on computer discs stolen from Liechtenstein – the softly softly amnesty approach may help avoid tricky legal challenges.
